Sole, J.P., this morning. One was without boots, and ail showed signs of their rough experiences. Terrill and Gemmill were charged that on February 19 tbey stole from the dwelling of Horace Nowell, Climie Road, Ngaere, the sum of £2 10s in money, the property of Veronica Groshinaki, and one hat, valued at 20s, the property of Basil Hagge. Terrill, Gemmill and McKay were charged with having on March 2, at Normanby, entered the dwelling of Arthur Powell and stolen therefrom one money box, one safety razor and one pair of field glasses, of a total value of £3, the property of Arthur Powell. Prisoners were remanded in custody until March 9. A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. An accident occurred at the Seyton Street railway crossing to-day. As the midday train from New Plymouth was approaching a horse in a gig driven by Mrs. Fred. Lane, of Midhirst, played up. The horse bolted over the line and the gig was completely wrecked by the train, Mrs. Lane being thrown out heavily. Dr. Steven was called, and ordered Mrs. Lane’s removal to the hospital, where she lies in a serious condition. A. AND P. CARNIVAL. A meeting of the committee in charge of the A. and P. Carnival was held last night, representatives of all the sports on the programme being present. Reports from the various sub-committees showed that great interest is being taken in the function, and that there is every likelihood of very satisfactory entries being received. It was decided to alter the conditions of the tug-of-war to teams of five on battens, the prize to be £1 per man. The sections of the footballers’ relay race were fixed at 440 yards, 220 yards, 120 yards and 100 yards. Four Highland dancing events have been added to the programme, and probably a demonstration of Highland dancing will be given. The Scottish members of the association are entering heart and soul into this section of the programme. At the request of a number of farmers a sheaf-tossing competition has been provided. This competition is very popular in the South Island, and no doubt local experts will be glad of an opportunity to show their skill.
