FIGHT WITH SHARK.
THRILLING EXPERIENCE. VICTIM TELLS HIS STORY. FOUGHT MONSTER WITH FISTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, March 3. Gannon’s version of his encounter rwith a shark in the surf at Coogee, after he was sent to hospital, was as follows: “I saw shark ten yards away and it rushed at me. I managed to jump on it. Like a flash ;t slithered under me. I tried to punch it away, but it bit off my right hand. It came again and I tried punching it with my left hand, but it got me again. “Then Brown and another chap readied me, and we were getting on nicely when the shark tore my back, but we managed to get in. They are great chaps. It will be awkward to have only one arm, and maybe I won’t have any, but I am not going to die.” WAR ON SHARKS. REWARD FOR THEIR CAPTURE. VOLUNTEER TO KILL THEM. Received March 3, 10.50 "p.m. ’ Sydney, Marth 3. Gannon, who was attacked by a shark at Coogee, has a chanee of recovering. The Government has set aside 100 guineas as rewards for the capture of sharks, with £5O for the capture of the shark responsible for the Coogee tragedies. Diver Jackson has secured permission to attempt to kill the shark, which is apparently lying in wait for further victims. He says he will explore the bottom in full diving dress, armed with a sheath knife, until he finds the monster.
A proposal is before the trustees of the Chalmers fund, which now amounts to £3OOO, for a portion to be granted to Brown, who rescued Gannon. The Lord Mayor suggests the formation of a fund on the lines of the Bulli disaster fund, for the purpose of rewarding acts of heroism in the surf or elsewhere.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
