T. Gibbons’ farm. “Kauchet,” on the Wingrove Road, Ngaere. A large gathering of farmers and ladies was predent and although the weather was wet throughout an interesting day was spent in the picturesque farm surroundings. A very tasty luncheon was dispensed by the ladies, who for their help and entertainment were the recipients of a very hearty vote of thanks.

Mr. H. E. B. Watson, official demonstrator for the New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association, was present for the purpose of speaking on the Jersey breed, and he also gave practical demonstrations in judging cattle. Air. F. Ranford. of Stratford, gave a demonstration of judging on type, and his capable efforts were well received. At the conclusion of Air. Ranford’s demonstration a popular vote was taken on the four cows in the ring, and this agreed with Mr. Ranford’s decision,, excepting for the third place. Air. Ranford took the opportunity to extend a welcome to the gathering. He said the club was very much indebted to Mr. and Mrs. Gibbons for the opportunity of holding the demonstration on their farm. When cattle were shown for prizes, Mr. Ranford said, the owners were not always willing to have them “pulled to pieces,” and they were fortunate in having farmers in their midst who allowed their cattle to be judged, and their faults pointed out. On Mr. Ranford’s motion votes of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Gibbons, the ladies, Air. Mehrtens and the Press were carried by acclamation.

Messrs. T. Haves and W. Johnson had a number of their cattle on the scene for demonstrating purposes. The cattle submitted for judging were of very high class, a number having creditable butterfat records. In this connection the champion cow “Goneril,” belonging to Air. Gibbons, must be mentioned as having a record of 652 lbs. of butterfat in 347 days as a two-year-old.

After luncheon Mr. Watson commenced hie demonstration, and despite the heavy rain for a considerable time kept a ring of spectators interested, explaining the points to look for in breeding or selecting a dairy cow. At the conclusion a number of questions were asked. A number of competitions were carried through, various classes in judging being keenly competed for, the following being the winners and receiving cash prizes:—Senior class: Air. J. T. Belcher, Mrs. Gibbons, Mr. J. Scheubert. ail equal, dividing the prize-money. Junior class: Q. Gernhoefer, Eva Birkett and J. Wheeler, all equal, dividing the prize-money. The champion bull, “Achievement of Willowbank,” owned by Mr. W. Johnson, was led out as a subject for demonstration. This bull was the champion at the Palmerston North. Hawera, New Plymouth and Stratford shows. At Stratford this animal carried off the New Zealand championship. At the conclusion of the address Air. Belcher called for a hearty vote of thanks and this was carried by acclamation.

The annual meeting and smoke concert of the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club was held in Smith’s tea-rooms, ’ Stratford, to-night, when Air. Watson delivered an address on the breeding of Jersey cattle and other matters pertaining to the breed. A toast list was also discussed. A report of this function will appear in Friday’s News.
