POLICY IN EGYPT.
PROTECTORATE TO END. PRESERVING THE EMPIRE. NEW PLAN DEVISED. By Telegraph.- -Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Feb. 28. Official.—Egypt has been created an independent Sovereign State, subject to certain reservations, and the protectorate has been terminated. Received March 1, 10.25 p.m. London, Feb. 28. Mr. Lloyd George, in the House of Commons, said a protectorate was no longer a satisfactory form of relationship between the British Empire and Egypt, but at present there was no Government in Egypt which could give adequate safeguards for the Imperial interests; therefore the Government had decided to proceed by unilateral declaration. In this course they had Lord Allenby’s whole-hearted support. Martial law would be abolished soon as an act of indemnity. In the final clause of the declaration four matters were absolutely reserved to the discretion of the Imperial Government — firstly, the security of communications; secondly, defence against all foreign aggression; thirdly, the protection of foreign interests in Egypt, and the protection of minorities; and, fourthly, the Soudan.— Aus.-N.Z.
