PROWESS WITH THE RIFLE.
The success of Taranaki riflemen at the Papawai meeting denotes that the province contains a number of marksmen of the first rank. It is particularly gratifying that the King’s Prize should this year have been gained by one of the most consistent competitors with the rifle—Mr. Roots, of Hawera — while another brilliant marksman (Loveday), also of Hawera, who has many successes to his credit, took fifth place, followed by Guy, of ■ Kaponga, who came next, and only one competitor separating the succession of Taranaki men, for Williams (Ohura) gained eighth place. Yet another, J. G. Ritchie (Hawera) obtained a place in the first fifty, being twenty-fourth. Taranaki may well be proud of such an array of rifle experts, especially when pitted against the best men in the Dominion. The encouragement of rifle shooting by the Government is not as satisfactory as could be wished, but when the finances of the country improve this should be altered. Meanwhile the successful marksmen of Taranaki are to be heartily congratulated upon their meritorious performance.
