NEV* PLYMOUTH CARNIVAL A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. > " ■- ■ - ■* A record for- attendance at a swimming carnival in New Plymouth was established at the Municipal Baths last night. The occasion was the New Plymouth Chib’s carnival in honor of the visit of Miss P. Hoeft, of Auckland (New Zealand 100 yards champion), and Miss P. Page, of Auckland (New Zealand intermediate girls champion). The increasing popularity of swimming was demonstrated by the splendid support forthcoming from the public, who swelled the gate takings to the extent of £45. The weather was good for swimming. The visitors disported themselves in the water to the admiration of the large crowd, giving exhibitions of the crawl, double-our, back-stroke, turning, etc. They also competed in handicap events, and though not successful in winning filled places on three occasions. General entries for the races on the programme were good, and the racing was interesting throughout. The management of the carnival was well arranged, and the events were got oil punctually. Officials were: Judges, Messrs. A. R. Standish and C. Brown; starter, Mr. W. H. Moyes; call stewards, Messrs. G. Bertrand and F. J. Eggleton; timekeepers, Messrs. V. Dalgleish and F. Ferry; secretary, Mr. K. Stohr; judge of diving, Mr. P. Mathieson. Details are:

50 Yards Secondary School Boys’ Handi-cap-—First heat: Rickard, (scr.) 1; Gibson (3sec) and Herdman (4sec), dead heat, 2; five starters. T me, 33 3-ssec. Boon (3sec) 1; A. Blennerhassett (4sec) 2. Four started, including Miss Hoeft (scr.), but the handicap was too great for her. A good finish between the placed men. Time, 34 2-ssec. Third heat: R. Hardy (ssec) 1; T. Corkill (7sec) 2. Won by a couple of yards. Time, 33 4-ssec. Final: James 1; Hardy 2. Won by a touch. Men’s Inter-club ' Diving.—Gibson 1, Blennerhassett, B. Boon and R. Wilson tied for second place, and Blennerhassett won the dive-off. Novelty Event; bun race.—Scrimgeour 1, Rug Wilson 2. An event that caused a good deal of fun. Ribbon Dive.—Rickard 1. Seven entrants. Relay Race.—Old Boys (Boon, Blennerhassett, McHardy and Morrison), scr., 1; High School (Rickard, Taylor, Collins and Brown), ssec., 2. Four teams entered, including a ladies’ team, of which Misses Hoeft and Page were members. VISITING SWIMMERS. This afternoon Misses Hoeft and Page will be present at the Municipal Baths to meet any children from the schools who can attend. To-morrow they compete at the Stratford carnival, and thence journey to Wellington, via Marton, where they will be present at ,carnivals.
