Mr. Hughes promised a deputation from Lysaght’s galvanised iron factory that he would recommend extra prot»«tive duty on iron to encourage the industry in Australia if manufacturers do not exploit the public by exorbitant prices. A FAST STEAMER. Sydney, Feb. 25. Mr. Hughes, speaking at a banquet aboard the Largs Bay, stated that the voyage from London was the fastest for eight years, being five days faster than the present mail steamers. AUbiRALIA DEFENDED. Sydney. Feb. 25. Replying to criticism by Mr, McGregor that Australia was suffering from sleeping sickness, Mr. Hughes stated that Mt. McGregor was a Government paid official, and should not criticise Australia. It was beyond all boundp. The High Commissioner would not similarly criticise the British Government. He invited Mr, McGregor to direct his attention to the plenty of spots on the sun in England. If we are suffering from paralysis here they are dead in England. PAPER PULP EXPERIMENTS. Melbourne, Feb. 25. The Minister of Customs states that five of 24 woods tested at the Forest Products Laboratory, Perth, have been selected as the most likely sources of a supply of paper pulp. The experiments are decidedly encouraging, hut require confirmation on a semi-commercial scale.
