COUNTER COMMANDO FORMED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Capetown, Feb. 23. Advices from Johannesburg state that revolt against the commando domination «by brutality is evidenced by the formation of a counter commando. Two hundred officials and workmen have returned to work. The federation is cabling the American International Federation for financial assistance. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. STATEMENT BY GENERAL SMUTS. DEBATE CONTINUED. Capetown, Feb. 23. General Smuts, in the Assembly, denied the rumour that the Government was calling on the forces to deal with commandos. Nevertheless the Government is increasing the police force in determination to carry out a policy of protection to peaceful workers. Commando Leader Watereon continued the debate. He attacked the Government, declaring that the commandos were organised for defence, not defiance. The Chamber of Mines, which was responsible for the Boer War, was a curse to the country. Sir Abe Bailey complained that the shop steward system was hampering mine management. He contended that the strike w r as brought about by politicians for political purposes. —Reuter. SPECIAL CONSTABLES RECRUITED. Capetown, Feb. 25. The Commissioner for Police at Johannesburg has issued a notice recruiting a thousand special constables to be incorporated in the police force to assist in maintaining order.
