WHANGAMOMONA.

THE ANNUAL SHOW. IN AID OF .MEDICAL ASSOCIATION. The sixth Whangamomona Annual Show, held in aid of the Whangamomona Medical Association, took place at the Sports Grounds on Saturday. The weather was excellent, but there was not as la-rge an attendance as last year. The entries in the horse events and sheep dog trials were good, but entries for the various exhibits were very poor. The management of the show was in the capable hands of Mr. W. Grant, who was ably assisted by a strong committee of willing helpers, and all tte events were handled in a most creditable manner. The aheep dog trials proved very Interesting and brought out some first class dogs, and there was also some very good jumping. In the evening a concert was held and the produce exhibit was sold by auction. Mr. R. Masters, M.P., in opening the show, expressed regret that there were not more people present, but said, that one could readily tinderstand the reason if one knew the factors operating during the past year. Most of the farmers now were doing a, certain amount of milking and could not so easily get away as before. Doubtless the school picnic had also (militated against the show. He had been impressed very much with the progress the Medical Association had made during the past two years and he was very much impressed by tlie very fine work undertaken by Nurse Myers. Two years ago the Association had raised the money to purchase the premises belonging to the Bank of Australasia, and they had raised with the Government subsidy something like £l2OO for this purpose. The district was to be heartily congratulated on raising this sum with such a small population. Out of the £l2OO there was only £lO owing and £5O owing to the Hospital Board, and In addition they tad raised the salary of the tsc to £450 per year. He had been asked to impress on the public the extreme necessity of supporting the Association to the best and fullest of their ability. Every pound that was given was subsidised to the extent of 24s by the Government. Ttey should "Stick loyally to the Association, which was doing very good work.

Mr.’Masters said that during the past ye?the district nurse had made 417 personal visits and attended 237 patients, and she was to be congratulated on the very fine work she had done. In cases of necessity a visit would be made to any part of the district, provided the nurse was driven to and from the place, for the sum of 2s 6d. Medical aid as far as Whangamomona was concerned was very cheap. It was necessary that there should be a doctor in tte district and it rested with the citizens themselves as to whether "they should have a doctor or not. He congratulated them on the show, which was a very important social function for the district, and toped it would prove a financial success. He referred to the difficulty in holding such a function owing to the present hard times. He regretted to express the opinion that the next nine or ten months were going to be hard, but it was just as well to face the position and not hide their heads in the sand. The whole trouble of the financial position to-day was that we had been having good times and borrowing money. This applied not only to Individuals, but also to local bodies and the Government, and we had to call a halt. Results:— HORSES.
