TO-DAY’S ROYAL WEDDING.
Throughout the British Empire to-day interest will centre in the marriage of Princess Mary, the only daughter of His Majesty King George V, to Viscount Lascelles, D. 5.0., heir to the Earldom of Harewood. The special feature of this union is that it is in every way popular among all classes of British people, for the reason that the bridegroom is one of the people and not a foreigner. No Royal wedding has so stirred popular fancy as that which is to take place to-day in the Motherland. Not only has the bride, like her brother the Prince of Wales, become endeared to all Britishers, but her choice of a husband fell on one who is thoroughly worthy of the proud position he will occupy as the husband of the King’s daughter. The marriage has every promise of a happy future for the contracting parties, and emphasises most convincingly the hold the Royal family has on the loyalty and affection of the people of the Empire—a devotion that is recognised throughout the world as without parallel in history. There are many other reasons why this unique and felicitous marriage should be acclaimed with universal approval, and there can be no doubt that it will constitute another link in that great democratic chain which binds the Empire together in ever-increasing unity and strength. The event, therefore, is one that calls for exceptional congratulations, and these have been in gratifying evidence since the betrothal was first announced. Of far higher value to Princess Mary will be the sincere good wishes that emanate from the loyal hearts of the people of the Empire, than the costly gifts showered upon her by those from whom such tokens of goodwill can be received. In these good wishes the citizens of Taranaki heartily join, in the sincere hope that the married life of the beloved Princess may oe full of happiness, and that in her new position she will still further exemplify those exceptional traits which have won for the Royal House of Britain such world-wide renown and esteem.
