ELTHAM.
BOROUGH COUNCIL, (From Our Own Correspondent.) • The monthly meeting of the Elfham Borough Council was held in the borough chambers on Friday evening. Preeent: The Mayor, Cre. Carter, Bain, Forsyth, Clement, Nairn, Bridger, Campbell. Or. Forsyth advocated that one license fee for heavy traffic, should be charged and proportioned between the county and borough councils. It was resolved that the Mayor, Crs. Carter, Campbell and Clement be a committee to confer with tiie County Council on thi s matter. It wap decided to allow the Chautauqua committee a rebate of £5 off the charge of £2O for rent of the hall. The various official reports were adopted. On a motion to charge £lO for the hall on Saturday nights instead of £2O as at present, an amendment was carried that the charge be £l5. THE RECENT FIRE. The superintendent of the fire brigade reported on the difficulties encountered when dealing with the.recent fire. Firstly, the engine lights fused, then the brl gade lost time in locating two plugs, one of which was over grown with grass, and, iastly, the pressure of watei was ■ not sufficient to deal with a fire of e .ch magnitude, the spreading of which was expedited by an explosion of detonators. — Received. GENERAL. At the conclusion of the Eltham Borough Council meeting on Friday evening, the Mayor expressed, regret at the departure of Cr. Bain from the Council Chamber. Several councillors spoke of the sterling work done by Mr. Bain during his short term of office, and it was resolved that the council’s appreciation of his efforts be placed on record. At Friday’s borough council meeting, the Mayor, on behalf of the council, thanked the local Fire Brigade for the manner in which it handled the recent fire. They had done remarkably good work under adverse conditions, and deserved p.aise for their strenuous efforts. The Mayor also placed on record the council’s appreciation of the good work of Mr. G. W. Bennett (late stationmaster) during his years in Eltham. Cr. Clement seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. A vote of sympathy was pissed to Messrs. Wilkinson and Goldstone over their recent heavy loss by fire.
