At the invitation of the committee a field day waa held at the Stratford Demonstration Farm on Friday, there being a considerable number of farmers and ladies present. The visitors were welcomed by the chairman (Mr. J. W. Deem) before being conducted over the farm, where the special pointe of interest in the management of the farm were explained. The lucerne field first claimed attention, a comprehensive variety of this fodder giving rise to considerable interest. The top-dressing of old pastures, the clover and root crops were inspected, the results of manurial tests being explained by Mr. Deem. After inspecting the piggeries and other branches of the farm’s activities an adjournment to the milking was made, where afternoon tea was dispensed. Mr. E. Walter, chairman of the Stratford County Council, spoke of the value of the farm to the town and district. He said the number of farmers present /that day was proof that the management of the farm was appreciated.
Mr. G. Sangteter (president of the Stratford A. and P. Association) aiso spoke eulogising the work of the committee and managers.
Mr. Deem said he would be pleased to see any of them at Moumahaki should they come down. He thought the policy of a number of smaller demonstration farms, if co-ordinated with a parent farm, preferable to one large farm on its own. This would be the policy of the department in future. The speaker concluded by expressing his appreciation of the good work done by the farm manager, Mr. Hartwig. He was a man who took a great interest in his work.
