TRIP TO MOKAU.
AN INTERESTING EXCURSION. A very successful excnr«ion to Mokau was carried out yesterday by Mr. Gearge Gibson. Some twenty-five pasAenge-fi made the trip, leaving the Gibson garage. at 6 a.m. Many of the effects at the recent flood in the Uruti valley are still in evidence in the shape of tons <>f drift wood lying far above ordinary flood level, and numerous *lipa on the joadside. The road ove Mt. Messenger is now metalled on the New Plymouth aide to the summit. After breakfast at Tongaporutu Mokftu was reached about 10 a.m., and the trip by launch up the river began. The shocking blunder in felling the bush on the steep banks of the river is more than ever apparent, many more acrea being now covered with rubbish than was the case, even a year ago. If the opinions of Mokau residents are of any moment, the new soldier settlers there are up against a tough proposition. Leaving Sheen’s landing at 2.30 p?m. the return journey to New Plymouth** 1 was completed before 7 p.m. There"* were a few showers during the day. insuffickent to mar enjoyment of an exar<r»ng«d excursion.
