MOTOR FATALITY.
BOY KILLED BY LORRY. ACCIDENT ON MANGOREI ROAD A fatal motor accident occurred in the Lower Mangorei Road, New Plymouth, on Thursday afternoon, whereby a six-year-old boy named Barton Avery, sou of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. C. Avery, lost hit life. 1 The boy and his sister were on their way home from school about 4.30, whan about a mile along the road they met a motor lorry, owned by Hooker Bros, and driven by Mr. Royce Hooker. The girl stood by the side of the road and the boy remained on the opposite side, but further down the road, to allow the lorry to pass. Just as the lorry was within a few yards of the boy, he suddenly started to run across the road in front of it. The lorry was travelling at eight to ten miles an hour on a bend near the bottom of a fairly stiff hill and Mr. Hooker swerved to the right, at the same time applying the brakes, in an endeavor to avoid the boy but, unfortunately, the latter stumbled right in front of the approaching vehicle, the front wheels of which passed over the lower part of his body just as the lorry was pulled up. The boy was taken by Mr. Hooker to a nearby house and Dr. Fulton was called in. The boy, who retained consciousness, did not appear to be seriously hurt, but after having been removed to the hospital, he died at an early hour yesterday morning. An inquest will be held this morning.
