Wonder will Tamatete trouble G-loam-mg in the Jackson Stakes? Ngata, as anticipated, the hotstuff in the Wanganui Cup, and won very easily. Volo was blocked when making his run in the Stewards’ Handicap on Thursday, and with a clear run would have won. Rude was always well placed in the Wanganui Cup, and though beaten was not disgraced. He is worth watching. Amythas made heavy work of it all the way in the Wanganui Cup, though McFlynn used whip and spurs to some purpose. He was surely not himself the day. Ihe \\ estmere Hurdle Race was run at a muddling pace, and after Te Maire had made most of the running, the rank outsider, Khartoum, blew along and won easily. The weight anchored Maniahera on Thursday, and always will do so. Another failure in the Hurdles was Simon, who refused to gallop a yard. Kinsem looked to have the Stewards’ Handicap won at the distance on Thursday. but the lightly-weighted Quest, after falling back, came again and won nicely at the finish. Punters picked the Wiritia Handicap well, Scion and Flying Nell, the favorites, fighting out a great finish, in which .Ashley Reed’s horsemanship just turned the scales in the former’s favor.
Mark Time did not look as well at Wanganui as he did at Flawera, and though always well placed in the Wiritoa Handicap, failed to run on at the right end, and finished just outside a place. He may do better at the Rangitikei meeting.
Rada simply cannot wip a race, but her backers collected a dividend in the Victory Welter through the mare being bracketed with the winner, La Palomo, Rada is held under lease by Albert Jackson from Mr. H. W. Brown, hence the bracket.
There was a fair amount of money for Equitable on Thursday, but 9st 131 b stopped him at the home bend. M. McCarten had him in a nice position up to this stage, but that was the end of it. Erie ran a good race in the Wiritoa Handicap, and finished fourth, though she had no chance of beating Scion at a disadvantage of 31bs. Tom Quinlivan s luck has been out lately, hut he broke the spell on Thursday by leading in the first two winners.
Wheatfield, who had been beating Scion on the tracks, was a warm order in the Victory Welter, but was badly placed in the early stages, and could not quite get up in the straight. However, he will keepL Valerie was an odds-on order in the Juvenile Handicap, and won nicely, coming strongly and cutting down The Emperor at the right end. The daughter of Hallowmas is very smart, as she has shown by winning three races in decisive fashion.
The start of the Juvenile /Handicap was a wretched one, Enthusiasm and Snatcher being badly left, while Ad Astra was also slow to move. The Emperor tried to win al) the way, but Valerie easily collared him in the run home. Enthusiasm was kicked at the post. The surprise of the day was the wonderful double-figure dividend returned by Still Sea in the Petre. Handicap. Mock er v was first favorite, with Still Sea tenth. Lively Fire made the early running, but retired in favor of Still Sea and Mockery at the home turn. From here on the Hawera pair fought out a oreat finish, the top weight just lasting long enough to score by a neck. Lady Kotiropo came from a rear position, and finished close up third. 'l’Axn&tate ‘‘touched” a Gloamme fig-
tire in the Flying Handicap, in which there were only six starters. AH moved off well with the exception of Silver Link, and Inah and Tamatete led along the back. Inah quickly shut up, and Awake and Silver Link tried to catch the favorite, but had no chance, Tamatete winning very easily in good time, his welter weight considered. Awake paid a much better second dividend than the winner did for first.
Rarely has a Cup race been won as easily as Ngata won the Wanganui Cup on 'Thursday. He ran 2.s9—equalling Dusky Eve’s record—and made good class horses look like common hacks. His owners, Messrs. J. Bull and J. McKelvie, were very confident of success, and threw in for a good win. Ngata has raced most consistently for several months, and his army of backers in the Rangitikei district were on him to a man. It was a “royaler”! Rouen was the only absentee from the Cup field, sixteen going to the post. Amythas was made favorite, followed by r.gotism, V agabond and Trespass (bracketed), Truthful, Ngata, Marqueteur and Foo Chow. At the post Bonnie Heatßer, Kilrush and Marqueteur were nearest the rails, with Amythas in the middle of the field, and Ngata, Rude and Egotism well out. After a long delay, Egmont Park was the first away, followed by Truthful, Rude and Ngata. Passing the stand Egmont Park was leading Ngata. Trespass, Rude, Foo Chow, Sycorax, and Bonnie Heather, with Amythas in the near. There was little change in positions until Ngata dashed to the front five furlongs from home, and then the race was all over. Foo Chow and Rude both made attempts to bridge the gap as they neared the straight, but Ngata drew away easily, and. ran in a comfortable winner. Foo Chow (second) was well clear of Rude, followed by Martial Dawn, Trespass and Sycorax. Amythas was about fourth from last, and looked very distressed. The clear cut defeat of Amythas occasioned some surprise,- but the big fellow has never started well on the Wanganui course, the sandy soil not giving him the required footing for such a big strider. However, it is a moral certainty that nothing could have beaten Ngata on the day—at Wanganui or anywhere else. He jnst strolled in that is the story in a few words.
At time of writing the second day’s acceptances are not available, but i; started, Wheatfield and Molleen Oge should run well in the Harrison Baek Handicap; Te Maire in the Fordell Hurdles; Valerie in the Okoia Handicap; Mockery and Mark Time in the Matarawa Handicap; Volo nd Kinsem in the Autumn Handicap; Ngata and Rude in the Wanganui Stakes Handicap; and Kinsem and Awake in the Farewell Handicap. The weather promises to be fine, and a larger attendance than on Thursday is expected. Mr. A. M. Brodie, veterinary surgeon, of Hastings, is at present in Taranaki. On Thursday he operated on Lackson for throat trouble, and Mr. Anstis horse is said to be making good progress. z
