MIGRATION PROBLEMS.
EFFECT OF COST OF TRAVEL. MATTER FOR ATTENTION. London, Feb. 10. The annual report of the Overseas Settlement Committee for 1921 states that the lack of employment was sufficiently in the Dominions to restrict migration other than of landworkers. Another adverse factor was the high cost of travel, which called for attention when the minimum fare to Canada was £44 10s and to Australia and New Zealand £3O. The present ordinary minimum fares of £lB and £4O are prohibitive to migrants lacking private means, and the number of former servicemen desirous of emigrating is now diminishing. “The problem,” the report adds, “increasingly becomes the provision of openings for the rising generation.” Referring to domestic workers required in the Dominions, the report says that the birthrate is being affected in the country districts, and sowing and harvesting are hampered by the lack of domestic help in a farmer’s home. The committee reiterates its opinion that labor organisations throughout the world recognise the importance of migration and are not opposed to it.
