WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Feb. 23. The Soldiers’ and Civilians’ Club, who are holding a sports meeting on Easter Monday, have elected the following committee to carry the fixture through: Messrs. D. George, H. L. Abbott, A. Lash, A. Jones, R. Kirby, n. de Launey, G. N. Skelton, W. Noswortry, R. Tate, T. Wilson, H. Spuraie, S. D. George, E. L. Clare, ano G. Bain (secretary). It is intended to put on a good programme, the prize money being in the vicinity of £lOO. The Waitara Lawn Tennis Club are gradually getting grounds on the camp reserve into ship-shape form. The committee have put in hand the making of their asphalt court, and the two grass courts will receive their sowing of grass next month. The Waitara Seaside and SurfBathing Club are holding their annual picnic on the JVest End beach on Saturday next. There will be a good tide and picnickers will be provided with plenty of healthy amusement. The annual competition for the Rewi Poto Cup (relay race) and challenge cup (tug-of-war), which are open to schools in the district, will be held, and no doubt keen competition will be provided.

Wool has started to come in from the back country, the increase in price influencing those who have been holding to sell. The Mahoe has had a load every return trip, and C. H. Johnston is bringing wool in his motor ’bus.

The steamer Leitrim will load in the Waitara roadstead in about ten days’ time. She will load* for West of England ports.

Mr. P. H. Passau, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Greymouth, and at one time accountant at the local branch, was a visitor to Waitara this week.

Mr. R Morgan (the Mayor) is now able to leave the private hospital and is spending a few days with his son down the coast. He expects to return to Waitara at the end of the week.
