THE BAND CONTEST.

CRITICISM OF NEW PLYMOUTH BAND. The following Is the detailed criticism by the musical adjudicator (Mr. Harry Shugg, of Melbourne) upon the performances of the 4th Regiment (New Plymouth) Band at last week's Wellington brass band contest: “GIRALDA” SELECTION. Allegro con fuoco: Crochets do not always receive full value. Playing fairly smart. Seml-quavers not always heard distinctly. Fairly good tone. Cornet cadenza: Nice. Andante: Fair tune and blend here. Like this shade slower, and cornet to take more liberty. Accompaniments nicely subdued. Cornet good tone. Just a shade loud from 13. Concluding bars nice. Allegro non troppo: First two bars should be smarter. Cornet little loud from 3. Trombone should stand out more. Soprano out of tune at 14. I think retard at 18 would be good idea. Neat work after ”F”. Cornet should be smarter from 50 ; otherwise good. Trombone cadenza : Nicely played. Maestoso: Think playing might be lighter here. Good body of tone. Nice playing from 10, but a little loud. Allegretto: Good euphonium; accompaniments neat. I think you could play In a more f istic manner In the slow movements. Good euphonium tone. Finish of movement good. Euphonium cadenza: Nice. Horn cadenza: Nice tone. A temix): I think you could take a good deal of liberty with this movement. Playing tuneful and neat. Allegro: Nice, neat playing. Rhythm • well marked. Plu mosso: Smart playing. Good soloist in this band. Good finish. Very creditable performance. Points 134. “MADAME BUTTERFLY” SELECTION. Allegro: Good up to bar 8. Band very scattered up to bar 15. Fair bars 25 to 44. Allegro sostenuto: Inner parts not well balanced. Don’t hear trombone at bar 26. Movement fairly well played. Sostenuto: Creditable. Allegro moderate: Solo cornet too loud at bar 19. Don’t hear trombone here. Cornet too loud for trombone bars 35 and 38. Allegro sostenuto: Rather fast. Soprano uncertain at bar 2Q. Tone and blend fair here. Allegretto : Cornet doing good work; Inner parts not so good. Andante molto mosso: Cornet, nice tone and style. Accompaniments well subdued. Bass nice. Good idea of this movement. Soprano enters too soon. Cornet, good tone still. Molto mosso: Tune not good nt bar 40. Tempo 1 : Rather too fast. Fair tone bar 50 and on. Allegro: Nice. Beginning uncertain at bar 29. Tune bad In this movement. Allegro moderate: Nice playing here. Moderate: Would like to hear more of euphonium. This should be more like a recit. Blend and tune creditable. Euphonium, nice tone. Accompaniments too loud from bar 38. Largo.t Good tone and blend. Soprano not well In tune at bar 3. Trombone weak bar 5. Allegro vivo: Fair. Moderato mosso: Cornets too light from bar 42; scarcely hear them. Tune and blend creditable. Cornets play wrong note bar 31. Moderato: Good balance, and tune. Good performance. Points, 142. ■
