WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Rev, J. P. Perkins, of England, who is on a visit to New Zealand, delivers a lecture at Knox Church on Wednesday in connection with the British and Foreign Bible Society work. Mr. Perkins has also seen war service in connection with the Y.M.C.A., and the lecture promises to be interesting. The reverend gentleman is the father of Mr. Perkins, of the Inglewood Presbyterian Church, and „at one time minister at Waitara. Mr. C. L. Morris, on transfer from Halcombe, has taken up his duties at the local post office. Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., when in Wellington recently, saw the extraction of oil from brown coal, and on making enquiries he was assured a plant for the purpose would not cost more than £2OOO. He believes such a process could be used with Mokau coal. At the Waitara Fire Brigade meeting on Friday last, the following members received the coveted medals and bars for long service:—Fireman Proctor, 5 yearservice medal; Fireman C. Limmer, years service bar (making 9 years jl all); and Superintendent Canton a sei vice bar (making his total 9 years). Material for the establishment of ; telephone exchange at Uruti has reeenth reached Waitara, and will shortly be in stalled. The installation will be on tin most modern lines, including a metallic circuit.
Herrings are fairy plentiful in the Waitara River. Last evening I witnessed a native catch (per jag) a manure sack full in less than an hour.
