SPRINGBOK ATHLETES.

VISIT TO PALMERSTON. BUKES’ GOOD TIME. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. A sports meeting wae held to-day at which the Springboks competed. The wen” er was overcast with intermittent rain, but the track was excellent. The visitors competed in five events from scratch. They had to concede much in handicaps to district competitors, but nevertheless they put up wonderful performances. In the 880 yards Leathern (South Africa) ran beautifully, coming fifth. The final of the 100 yards was very exciting; Bukes (South Africa) secured a good start and won in 9 4-5 secs, receiving an ovation. The same runner finished fast in sixth position in the 300 yards. In the final of the 440 yards Johnston (South Africa) finished fifth. The relay race was won by the Springboks easily, Bukes sprinting finely at the finish.

Results of the events in - which the visitors competed are:— 880 yards Handicap.—E. Waggery (65 yards) 1, H. J. Gimblett (90 yards) 2, I. Burke (90) 3. Also started: D. Leathern, ser., (South Africa). Won by one yard, a similar distance between second and third. Time, 2min. 2 2-5 secs. 100 yards Handicap.—Final: Bukes (South Africa) scr. 1, S. T. Hughes 11 yards 2, J. Norris 8 yards 3. Also competed: Kinsman (South Africa), Emery (South Africa) scr. Won by a yard. Time, 9 4-5 secs. 300 yards Handicap.—J. A. Bambery (35) L J. J. Norris (15) 2, J. Ferguson (30) 3. Also started: W. Bukes, scr. (South Africa). Time, 32secs. 440 vards Handicap.—G. S. Leeder (30) 1, C. G. Spencer (45) 2. J. Ferguson (45) 3. Also started: R. Johnson (South Africa) scr. Time, oOsecs. •Relay Race (inter-club) of 880, 440, 220 and 220 yards. —South Africa (W. Bukes, R. Johnston, R. Kinsman and D. Leathern) 1, Manawatu 2, Paraparuma 3. Won by 60 yards, a similar distance between second and third. Time, 3min. 50secs.
