KAPONGA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Widespread regret and feelings of deepest sympathy were expressed in and around Kaponga to-day when it became known that the hand of death had called our popular townsman, Mr. A. T. Bertie, to his long home. During the past fiftee i years no movement that had for its object the betterment of the township had a more enthusiastic supporter than “Freddie”. As a patron of sport, whether cricket/ hockey or football, Mr. Bertie had more than a local reputation, and as he stood for all that is clean and sportsmanlike his influence will be. much missed.
The Fire Brigade, Oddfellows’ and Freemasons’ Lodges, the School Committee and the Town Board all benefited from his whole-hearted support. During the struggling days of the Parish Hall Mr. Bertie was the leading spirit in organising dances and entertainments; in fact, wherever an efficient M.C. was required tie was always willing to assist. As a mark of respect to his memory the flags at the local school and at the Fire Brigade station were flown at half-mast to-day. Mr. Bertie leaves a widow and two children tn mourn his loss, and the deepest sympathy of the district goes out to the bereaved ones.
