Amythas Is certainly a marvellous (says a Christchurch writer). He se sore after his first day exertions At Wfc/vtUl that it was deemed inadvisable to sta.-t Mm in the Hazlett Memorial Plate on Saturday. On his return to Riecarton he freshened up wonderfully, and It would come as no surprise to see him racing again at Wanganui.
At the Renmark (S.A.) races last week the Brush Steeplechase was won by the Six Shooter gelding Burgoo, a dun pony. Strangely enough, at the same time his dam was hitched up to the ice cream cart on the racecourse. And our old friend Di Gama fills the shafts of a Chow’s green-grocery outfit in the same State; such is man's gratitude to faithful equines. In J.'ngland a man named W. W. Miller discovered an infallible betting system. It was that of backing winners after they had won, but it landed him in trouble, as he was arrested and committed for trial for endeavoring to obtain a sunn of money from a bookmaker by false pretences. The Sporting Life says Miller did not burn the midnight oil over volumes of form, and his "system” was more infallible than all the rest rolled into one. His only stock-in-trade was a couple of envelopes and one stamp, and this was his simple method of procedure. He placed one envelope inside the other, stamping the inside one, and tearing away that part of the outer envelope above the stamp so that the inside envelope would receive the postmark. The outer envelope Miller addressed to himself. When the letter returned to him through the post he took out the inner envelope. -now properly dated ;pid post-marked, encl' ’ ’-’ii,«,• it betting slips for horses wh:-r i.n ’ won. addressed it, and personally iUM.> itm*.
