THE TRAMWAYS.

THE ONE-MAN SYSTEM. QUESTION OF EXTENSION. The alteration of the existing tram cats for one-man operation was the subject of a report to last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council by the tramways manager (Mr. R. H. Bartley). He stated: “It will be remembered that in connection with the adoption of this system it was intended to arrange our older type cars by fitting doors, altering partitions, etc., plans of which were prepared, and after some difficulty were approved by the Government. ’ We require to have these cars altered before a satisfactory service on the one-man system can be operated on the main route, as under present conditions we have not enough of the one-man cars to arrange a satisfactory time-table. I refer to the four small cars only. It was intended to make alterations to the large cars as well. From experience, however, I have rather changed my mind in this direction, and for the time being I would not suggest interfering with the large cars.” In the course of discussion Mr. said that the repairs would not affect the operation of the cars by two men. All modern practice was to fit doors to cars, and the other changes, including putting in windows instead of blinds at each end. The council decided to defer consideration until next meeting.
