TURF TOPICS. (By *'Moturoa”.> The Wanganui Cup meeting, which opens on Thursday next, is now engaging attention, and a good number of Taranaki “sports” will be in attendance —though not so many as in past years, when money was more plentiful. The “hobby” of race-following is a declining one, and the autumn and winter meetings may be expected to show an all-round reduction in receipts. What the spring has in store for ns can only be conjectured, but most people are optimistic enough to hope’ for the best. The Wanganui Cup promises to draw a good and the presence of the mighty Amytbas is sure to invest the race with more than usual interest. Southern reports are te the effect that the crack is a certain start-
er, and on his Dunedin Cup running he has earned his position as first favorite. Others that are fancied include Egotism, Rude, Trespass, Ngata, Lovematch, Truthful, Sycorax and Egmont Park, so the issue appears to be very open. Amythas may be good enough to win with 10.2, but strong opposition will be met with from Rude (8.10). The best of the lightweights appears to be Egmont Park. The Hawk Is said to be an unlikely runner at Wanganui, which will leave Jilver Link in the post of honor in the Flying Handicap. She is a great mare, and will be caught at her best this week, and must have a great chance. Tamatete is good, but reads badly only 41bs below Silver Link. Absurdum’s recent form has not been good, but Awake cannot be overlooked with 7.11. The best handicapped one is Inah 7.4, and she will let them know she is in the race, even if she doesn’t lift first prize. Amber Tips and Blackmail may have more than "rough” chances, but whatever beats Silver Link and Inah will have to travel very fast.
Maniahera looks to have a mortgage over the Westmere Hurdles, the class being very poor. Redlogue is nicely placed in the Wiritoa Handicap, and Kinsem and Volo should go well in the Stewards’ Handicap. The Victory Welter will take some picking, but Sunny Jim and Lady Nassau are sure to carry big money. I Valerie, Wake Up and Enthusiasm should all go well in the Juvenile, and Still Sea, Mark Time and Lively Fire should give a good account of themselves in the Petre Handicap.
Volo won on the second day with even greater ease than he did in the Woodville Cup. and it will take a lot of weight to keep him out of the money at Wanganui this week.
Man o’ War, with £2325, is the leading winning horse in the harness ranks this year. His owner, Mr. J. R. Corrigan, leads the winning owners with £4860.
A couple of evenly matched ponies bobbed up at Victoria Park the other day, when Why Why and Beon, after dead-heating in the 14.2 handicap, ran another dead heat in the runoff. The stewards then wisely ordered a division of the prize.
The imported Wheatfield is said to have benefited by the racing he had at Trantham, and when next saddled up will be a tough proposition. With over a mile gone in the Dunedin Cup Amythas was dead last. He then put in a good run, but was knocked back. Coming again in the straight he was third at the finish—a good performance.
Even with running shoes it was difficult to get “set” on Rowan in Palmerston on Thursday, but the “good thing” was beaten by a smile, and backers lost a small percentage of their investments. . It was a poor betting race on the course, only between £BOO and £9OO being invested on the totte
