EGYPT’S FUTURE.
AGREEMENT ON POLICY, DECISION OF CABINET. TERMS NOT REVEALED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Feb. 17, 7.25 p.m. London, Feb. 17. Cabinet has reached a complete agreement with Lord Allenby (High Commissioner in Egypt) on the future government of Egypt. The terms have not yet been announced, but it is understood Lord Allenby will return to Egypt immediately, empowered to negotiate for an arrangement with Sarwat Pasha. It is believed Lord Allenby has accepted the main heads of the policy announced in January with a compromise relating to garrisons.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. On January 29 the following cable was sent from London: The Foreign Office has issued a statement declaring that the British Government, while unwilling to cede to disorder or violence what it was prepared to grant on its own merits, expresses its readiness to invite Parliament to terminate the protectorate and to recognise the existence of Egypt as a sovereign State on the following conditions: That the Imperial communications to which Egypt is essential are assured; that Britain retain the right and power to protect foreign communities in Egypt, and that Egypt is safeguarded against all foreign aggression or interference. When an agreement embodying these conditions is arrived at between the Egyptian Government and Britain, the British Government will invite Parliamentary sanction.
