THE CHATHAM’S VISIT.
It is matter for regret that the visit of H.M.S. Chatham to New Plymouth is fixed for a date at which the deep water berth at the wharf will probably be occupied by an ocean liner, with the prospect of another liner being kept waiting. Yet the difficulty is one that can easily be overcome by making special arrangements that will enable the warship to come to the wharf and yet avoid delay to. the overseas vessels. It should merely ’be a question of obtaining the co-operation of the waterside workers in facilitating matters on such an exceptional occasion. By working the cargo at night time delay could be avoided, and if there is any difficulty as to the payment of overtime rates that can easily be settled by means of a public subscription. We are confident that, in view of the importance of a warship entering the harbor, and the effect such a forward move would have in advertising the port’s ability to accommodate ships of deep draught, satisfactory arrangements can ibe made by the authorities immediately concerned, as the berthing of a man-o’-war would mark a new era in the history of the progress of the province and the development of its harbor. Without doubt the public of Taranaki will keenly enjoy the' Chatham’s visit, and will certainly expect that any difficulty connected therewith will be satisfactorily overcome, for the occasion will he a red letter day in Taranaki’s history.
