PRICES FOR MUTTON.
LOW .VALUES REPORTED. MAY BE AN OLD PARCEL. :OOD PRICES FOR NEW. Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Referring to a Press statement that a sale of prime Canterbury lambs had been made at 9d c.i.f.e., and that mutton values had fallen, the Prime Minister says the Government has as yet no information, but enquiries are being made. Mr. Massey added: “It is stated that it - is possible a parcel of old season’s lamb inay have been sold at a reduced price, tout it is desirable that more information should be obtained before any further expression of opinion is given. One piece of certain information is available, viz., that I know of a cable received this morning which has fixed the sale of a parcel ef new season’s lamb at a very satisfactory price. “Reference to the liberation of Armoire’ meat suggests the creation of an idea that the placing of this on the market may cause an over-eupply for the time being and a consequent fall in prices, but it should be pointed out that an agreement was arrived at with Armour and Co. that the marketing should be done in such a way as to avoid such a thing happening, and the conditions agreed upon, under which the meat will be shipped will ensure Qiat this will be the case. If the reported statement be correct it affords a good illustration for the necessity which existed for the passing of the Meat Export Control Act and for quickly sotting up the Board of Control.”
