SUPREME COURT.
AUCKLAND SESSIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Feb. 15. In the Supreme Court, Hendry Ward, charged with the theft of three oxen, at Clevedon, was found guilty with a recommendation to mercy, the jury being of opinion that the act was foolish rather than criminal. His Honor imposed a fine and ordered the payment of £9 14s to recompense the persons who sustained the loss, the alternative being three months in prison. Auckland, Last Night. At the Supreme 'Court Albert Davidson, alias John Johnson, was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment for receiving, had been acquitted of entering and. theft at Mangere. CASES AT DUNEDIN. Dunedin, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day George Devenney, who was yesterday found guilty with a strong recommendation to mercy on a charge of shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm, came up for sentence. Judge Sim said that in view of the jury’s recommendation and accused’s previous good character he would be justified in inflicting a pecuniary penalty, and fined him £5O. Edmond Traherne, charged with attempted murder and shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm to one George Wilson, of Cannibal Bay, Owaka, was found not guilty on both charges. The shooting appeared to be the result of a drunken spree. Robert Brims, a storekeeper, of Kurow, charged with carnal knowledge of a girl of 14 years, was found guilty and sentenced to two years’ hard labor. PROBATION GRANTED. Palmerston North, ]?<>b. 15. In the Supreme Court, Hannath Noel Blake Marshall, of Pahiatua, who pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing property, was placed on probation for two years.
