Mr. O. Hawken, M.P. for Egmont, was a passenger to Wellington by the mail train yesterday morning.

Dr. Benham, professor of biology at the Otago University, is at present on a visit to New Plymouth. A Sydney message reports the death of Mr. Bertram Stevens, literary and art critic, aged 49.

General Sir Alex. Godley has been appointed to command the British troops on the Rhine, says a London cable. Lady Carbery, who was recently divorced, marries Major Basil Bebb, son of Canon Bebb, at a West End registry office, states a cable from London. The Rev. M. Mullineux, who did such splendid work among the New Zealand sick and wounded in France, is to speak at New Plymouth on Monday, 27th inst., and Hawera on the following evening.

A message from Los Angeles says that a move has been made to annul Mary Pickford’s divorce. The State alleges that the star knew she was breaking the laws in divorcing Owen Moore, who played cards in Colorado with Indians while she got her decree. The names of Misses Lily Blewman (New Plymouth), Malvina Wefber (New Plymouth), and Hilda H. Vickers (Omata) have been approved for appointment as probationers at the New Plymouth hospital.

The Rev. A. McCallum, president of the Australian Conference of the Methodist Church, who is visiting New Zealand in connection with the celebration of the centenary of the Methodist Church in New Zealand, arrived in New Plymouth last night on a short visit. The Rev. 0. Blundell, of New Plymouth, with a party of five other holi-day-makers from the south, is making a cruise in northern waters under the direction of the veteran yachtsman, Mr. D. Mackay parroch, of Stanley Bay, Auckland. Sister Edith M. Hamblyn and Nurse D. F. Dew are resigning their positions on the staff of the New Plymouth hospital at the end of the month, and at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital’ Board their resignations were accepted with regret.

A London cable reports the arrival there of Sir John Salmond, who represented New Zealand at the Washington Conference. Sir John arrived by the Aquitania and was a recipient of the public welcome at Waterloo station which was accorded to Mr. A. .1. Balfour, Lord Lee, Mr. Sastri and other delegates. Mr. Lloyd George, Lord Birkenhead and other members of the Cabinet were present. Mr. Balfour was greeted with a volley of cheers.
