LITTLE GIRL ASSAULTED.
A BRUTAL CRIME. ' Whangarei, Saturday. Late last night the W t hangarei police were informed by telephone that a Maori girl had been criminally assaulted ■at Moangawahine, her condition being serious. Detective de Norville, with Constable Clarke, went out by car, taking a doctor with them. It was ascertained that the girl, whose age is about 1.3. had been dragged from horseback and taken into the scrub, being brutally treated. It was not advisable that she be moved, an'd medical aid vpas rendered. The police, after investiation, arrested a youth at Tehora, about three miles from Moangawahine, at three in the morning. He was brought to Whangarei to-day. This youth, whose age is stated to he under 16. was formally charged with rape, and remanded to Tuesday next, when it is probable that a further remand will fbe asked for.
