BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Feb. 14. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last week, Cr. Johns occupying the chair in the absence of the Mayor. A letter was received from the Harbor Board regarding river bank erosion. The clerk, in reply to a question regarding the formation of a river board, stated it would mean mapping out a district and gaining the consent of the ratepayers to incorporation. Cr. Johns said he thought the borough should shoulder the responsibility; something would have to be done, otherwise the town would suffer. —The matter was deferred. The health officer reported that for the twelve months ending December 31 there were 14 cases of infectious diseases in the borough, viz., 4 schriet fever, 4 diphtheria, 2 tuberculosis, 1 pneumonia, 1 influenza, 2 infantile paralysis. Nine of these cases had been removed to hospital. The number of cases notified is 6 per cent, of the total number of cases ' for the whole of the district being at the rate of 8.94 per 1000 f population. The acting-waterworks overseer asked the council to make a stated time for the filling of the school baths.—lt was resolved that the clerk and overseer confer and communicate their directions to the school committee. To obviate the blocking of the intake by debris Cr. Jones advocated a stone wing on the up river side.—-It was resolved the waterworks committee make an inspection. The appointment of a successor to Mr. Westerman as overseer was discussed, and was deferred. In the meantime Mr. Kenrick is to receive 2s extra per day whilst he is doing the overseer’s work. The council, sitting as a Domain Board, dealt with an application from 1 the Football Club Sports Committee asking for a reduction to 10 per cent, on gate receipts, owing to the fact that they had considerably improved the ground. The council met the application favorably. Rather than create a precedent they decided to subsidise the work done up to £7. The balancesheet of the Domain Board showed a credit of £8 15s Bd. NORTH TARANAKI SOLDIERS’ AND CIVILIANS’ CLUB. There was a fair attendance at the annual general meeting of members of the above club. Mr. J. Parry (president) presided. The balance-sheet adopted showed that the year’s receipts were £‘2o2 5s 2d. The assets total £877 10s, being mainly £OOO for property, £’2oo for billiard table and accessories, £56 4s furniture. Officers were elected as follows: Patron. Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P.; president, Mr. J. Parry; vice-presidents, Rev. G. H. Gavin, Dr. Allison, and Mr. P. J. Allen; secretary, Mr. Bain; treasurer, Mr. Sharp; committee, Messrs. Kirby, A. Jones, E. Tate, H. Abbott. Southwell, Herbert Joll, A. Rowe, 5L Frost, Waters, Bennett, A. Young, Locke, R. J. Pennington and Boddye. Mr. E. L. Clare tendered his resignation as caretaker. Mr. A. Fulton was nominated as his successor.

The president proposed that the rate of subscription for the ensuing year be reduced in the case of civilians -from 30s to 21s, the soldier members to pay 10s. There was considerable difference of opinion on the subject, and a ballot was taken with the result that the fee was fixed at one guinea for civilians and 10s for returned soldiers. The president reported that the billiard tournament on the club table had been a great success. To further popularise the room, Mr. F. Locke had offered a three guinea prize for a championship, entrants to be residents of Waitara. The offer was accepted with thanks Votes of thanks were passed to Mr. E. L. Clare for his faithful custodianship; also to Messrs. Southwell and Sharp for their services as secretary and treasurer respectively. GENERAL. Mr. Parry, at the Soldfers’ and Civilians’ Club meeting on Friday night, said it was desired to reduce their mortgage from £275 to £2OO this year. To help to bring that about it was proposed to hold a e sporrs meeting on Easter Monday, The Waitara Municipal Band gave a recital on the west side beach on Sunday afternoon. The weather was ideal, and attracted a good many to the beach. The band gave a good programme, and Conductor C. Sampson is to be congratulated on the band’s improved efficiency. It is to be hoped there will be more of these concerts.
