SHOCKING FATALITY.
YOUNG MAN KILLED BY TRAIN. The passengers on the Auckland - bound express, which left Wellington at midday on Monday, were startled by a sudden application of the brakes just as the train was running across the level crossing at Paraparaumu (about 38 miles from Wellington), and the unexpected stopping of the train indicated that something untoward had happened. It was soon apparent that a serious mishap had occurred, for a youth was picked up in a frightfull J’ battered condition, and a motor cycle, which he had been riding, lay twisted into an almost shapeless form where it had been thrown clear of the line.
It appears that the victim, tfcarry Field, aged 18 years, who had been engaged in farming, resided near Paraparaumu, and was speeding across the level crossing on his motor cycle about 2 o’clock when he was struck by the engine of the express and thrown with terrific force several yards away. -Two doctors who were, on the train examined Field, who was found to be unconscious and suffering severe fractures and many wounds. The medical men realised that the youth’s condition was so serious that he could not live more than half an hour. He was lifted on to the train with the intention of transferring him to the Otaki Hospital. Just when the train reached Otaki railway station, however, Field expired.
