AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRANTS.

ALLEGED HOAXINu OF OFFICIAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.-—Copyright. Sydney, Feb. 14. A batch of immigrants arrived in the Commonwealth liner Largs Bay. The welfare officer, interviewed, stated that some people had secured free passages who were not entitled to them, as they had no intention of going on farms. One man was a racehorse owner, another had accepted a position in Perth University, and one young lady had 70 dresses and golf clubs. The immigration authorities ridicule the statement, and explain that the officer had been hoaxed. Members of the crew of the Largs Bay are deemed ineligible to take the ship back to England, because they are not members of the Australian Union. The crew are indignant and threaten to boycott all Australian seamen visiting England.
