CATTLE TICK.
A DISQUIETING REPORT. SAID TO BE GRADUALLY SPREADING SOUTHWARD. A Times reporter was informed last week by a stock agent who has recently returned from a visit to the cattle tick infested areas in the North Island that there is a great danger of the tick finding its way into the Poverty Bay district (if it is not already there) and other districts?
The opinion he formed during his investigations was that tick gmong cattle is spreading down the coasts of the North Island gradually, if not rapidly. He stated that the district north of Auckland was practically the only one for a considerable period where tick was known to be affecting cattle to any appreciable degree. It has now worked its way down through the Bay of Plenty and has been discovered in the Raglan and other districts.
Inquiries were made of the Agricultural Department respecting tick, but as the matter is at present under consideration by the Minister, no information could be given. It was learnt, however, that the areas where tick was in evidence were known to the department; that no new districts had, as far as inspection had shown, been affected; and that steps had been taken to prevent spreading. The Minister, it was stated, was fully alive to the position, and was giving the question close consideration.
