DRIED MILK INDUSTRY.

PROSPECTS NOT DISCOURAGING. A largely-attended meeting of guarantors to the Waitoa dried milk factory took place recently. Mr. Claude Motion. chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., presided (says the Waipa Post). In his address he forecasted a substantial improvement generally in the butter and cheese markets, following the disposal of the stocks lately held by the Imperial Government. He was convinced that the timely action of the New Zealand and Australian producers with a view to obtaining control of these stocks stimulated the buyers in don, and this was the cause of the sudden quitting of existing stocks. Latest advices concerning the dried milk industry showed that everything is satisfactory, and there is .marked evidence that the product of the Waitoa factory would be disposed of at very satisfactory prices. Special arrangements have been made for the sale of the whole of the company’s output by Mr. Goodfellow during his visit to England. Mr. Motion concluded -by giving a statement regarding the finances of the company. Very keen interest was centred in this connection.* In reply to a remark anent the c ‘ os ' ing of the factory, Mr. Motion said that there was no necessity even to consider the possibility of closing down, and the operations would, for the first season s run, be profitable. Indications are particularly good, and indicated no particular ‘ anxiety. During the first few months of the factory’s running no doubt the costs were fairly high, but even then a margin still existed between the manufacturing and selling costs ana the probable market value. In reply to an objection at having to pay Id per lb for cartage, it was agreed that the position be investigated and ii possible a reduction made.
