THE BAND CONTEST.
YESTERDAY’S SOLO RESULTS. NEW PLYMOUTH PLACED. By Telegraph.—Press Associatic.. . Wellington, Last Night. The band contest opened to-day. There was a large gathering present. A civic reception was given to the visitors, when the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) welcomed bandsmen from all parts of the Dominion. There was a spectacular parade, all the bands marching through the city. No band contest has been held in Wellington for eleven years. The bands included winners of the different grades at recent contests, and it is expected there will be keen competition. Solos, etc., were played to-day, and will be continued to-morrow. In the evening the B grade selection, “Giralda” (twenty entries) will commence. Results are:: G Trombone Solo.—F. Cumming (Wellington Watersiders),- 86, 1; I. Holdsway (Nelson Garrison), 81, 2; A. Handley (4th Wellington Regiment, New Plymouth), .80, 3. E Flat Cornet Solo. —W. Cooper (Woolston), 96, 1; A. Mcßobie (Wellington Watersiders), 89, 2; J. Harding (Marton Municipal), 88, 3. Bass Drum Solo. —G ; Kilmartin (Palmerston North Municipal), 45, 1; H. Hall (Wanganui Garrison), 43, 2; W. Horne (4th Wellington Regimental, New Plymouth), 42, 3. Side Drum Solo.—W. Carmichael (Palmerston North), 43, 1; T. Gee (Auckland Artillery), 41, 2; P. Beadle (Invercargill Hibernian), 35, 3. The band contest was continued to-night at the Town Hall, the whole evening being devoted to quartettes, for which no less than 28 entries were received. Result: Waterside Workers (Wellington) No. 1, 1; Invercargill Hibernian, 2; Woolston No. 1,3; Waterside Workers (Wellington) No. 2, 4.
