The full team of South African athletes now touring the Dominion, accompanied by Mr. A. Davies, president of the N.Z.A.A.A., and Mr. Sutherland, paid a brief visit to Hawera on Friday on their way from New Plymouth to Wanganui. A civic welcome was tendered them by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. Morissey). Mr. Morissey, in welcoming the visitors to Hawera, said that he deeply regretted that it had not been possible to include Hawera in the South Africans' itinerary, but it ; had given him pleasure to hear of the visitors* wonderful performances. The manager of the Springbok team (Mr. I. Emery), in replying, said that the reception was an unexpected one. He referred to their tour through New Zealand, and mentioned the good times which had been given them everywhere. They appreciated the visit, as it had done a great deal of good and would cement friendship. The visitors ware then entertained at supper in the Islington Tea Rooms by the local athletic club. After supper had been dispensed, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, president of the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club, extended a welcome to the visitors on behalf of the club. Mr. A. Davies, president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, said that had it been possible to have fitted in a visit of the South African team to Hawera nothing would have pleased them better. As was known, the team had a long way to go in a rfhort time, and therefore had to curtail their tour a little. If he happened to be at the head of affairs when another team was visiting New Zealand, he« would make a strong point of including Hawera. in the itinerary. The manager of the visiting team also suitably replied to Mr. Burdekin's welcome. After a pleasant stay of about half an hour the visitors left for Wanganui.
