STARVING RUSSIA.
BRITISH HELP. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Feb. 10, 8.45 p.m. London, Feb. 9. Mr. Lloyd George, in reply to questions in the House of Commons, said the Government was fully alive to the terrible state of famine-stricken Russia. Despite the British people’s heavy burdens the Government had made substantial contributions in the shape of materials and stores in order to alleviate Russia’s sufferings. Russia’s only hope lay in coming into closer community with the rest of Europe. This could only be possible on the same conditions as other countries. He was looking forward to the Genoa Conference establishing relations with Russia on a firm and workable basis.
The supplementary estimates contain a sum of £300,000 for the maintenance of Russian refugees.
AMERICAN RELIEF COMMITTEE. New York, Feb. 9. It is reported from Washington that, under the pretext of the collection of funds for Russian famine sufferers, sympathisers with Russian Bolshevism in the United States are »ing gathered into a vast organisation throughout the States to which Governors, Bishops and other prominent officials and per' sons have innocently lent their names as members.
The advisory council of the Department of Justice is investigating the organisation. which calls itself the American Russian Famine Relief Committee. Results disclose that it is closely connected with the Russian Red Cross, a semi-official Soviet Government organisation. t
Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised, but very ’ little has been sent to Russia. Well-known Communists are directing the organisation, which is attacking the legitimate Hoover relief work.
