THE PRICE OF BUTTER. In the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Mr. Field asked the Prime Minister if he could see his way to have the Government co-operate with the dairy authorities to secure regularity of supply. In his reply, Mr. Massey stressed the necessity of seeing that our butter was properly marketed, and said that approval had been expressed of what the High Commissioner was doing in conjunction with other High Commissioners to prove that our butter was little, if at all, inferior to that from Denmark. A London cable earlier in the week stated that Danish butter was (being retailed at 1/9 per pound, and New Zealand at 1/4. The cable added that: “One of the chief reasons is the fact that Danish arrives regularly thrice weekly, assuring customers a constant supply, whereas New Zealand arrives at irregular intervals, and slow and uncertain discharge prevents retailers getting their requirements regularly. One of the leading importers says that if he could assure retailers that they would receive their usual quantities very week, New Zealand prices would be within a few shillings of Danish.” Making allowance for all this, it is difficult to understand why there should be such a marked disparity between the prices for the New Zealand and Danish articles. Experts have <Teclaled for many years past that our butter is equal to Danish. For ten years ending June 30, 1914, the average prices at Home were: Danish 120 s per cwt: French, 118/-; New Zealand, 1-13/-, a difference only of 7/- per cwt., or •about §d per lb, against 5d per lb now prevailing. It is not that the quality of New Zealand 'butter has deteriorated. On the contrary it has kept up wonderfully well, whilst the Danish article went off considerably during the war in the eagerness of the Danes to make money whilst the “going was good.” The British importers of New Zealand butter evidently are also concerned about the big price difference between Danish and New Zealand, for we were recently informed <by cable that they were about to institute a publicity campaign on behalf of New Zealand butter. Evidently the High Commissioner is assisting in the propaganda, judging from Mr. Massey’s remark in the House on Wednesday. The regularity of Danish supplies and proximity to the market must always give our competitors an advantage, but not so considerable a one as now obtains. In Denmark they aim at producing all the year round, with the result that there is never more than 15 per cent, of variation in production between the highest and lowest points, whereas New Zealand production ceases for three to four months in the year. If it is going to mean a difference of from 4d to 5d a lb in what he receives for his butter-fat, the New Zealand producer may turn his attention to all-the-year production. Meantime a vigorous, well-directed publicity campaign at Honje should help to reduce the margin at present existing between the prices for the Danish and New Zealand articles.
