There are rich prizesor racing in Australia, America, and England, but Spain is going for a world’s record this year. In a recent issue of an Engllst paper the conditions of the Grand Prix de Alphonse XIII., to be run by the Jockey Club de San Sebastian at the Lasarte racecourse, San Sebastian in September n«xt, are published. The race in question carries 500,000 pesetas (about £20,000) and a gold cup presented by King Alphonse. The distance of the Grand Prix de Alphonse is about a mile and a-half, and the race ■is for horses three years and upwards, the former to carry 8.5 and the latter 9.4. There are penalties and allowances, the latter including 2 bilos (about 4%1b) to horses imported Into Spain before February 1, 1922, and belonging wholly or in partnership to one or more owners keeping a racing stable for some time before 1922. The first forfeit is £2O, and it costs £lBO to start, while horses not previously nominated can come up to September 1 on the payment of £640. The first prize Is £16,000, second £2OOO. third £l2OO, and fourth £BOO. An additional £2OOO will be given the breeder if the winner is a horse foaled in Spain.
