A meeting of the Calcutta branch of the European Association resolved that i was time for the Raj to come off the fence to support the loyal citizens and for the Citizens’ Protection League, formed with the object of countering civil disobedience and other activities of the non-co-operators. A committee consisting of leading Europeans and Indians was appointed.

Following a procession in connection with the non-co-operative volunteer conference at Calcutta, seventy participators were arrested.

A serious riot is reported in the Tiruvaduthurai district, Madras, arising out of the selection of a successor to a dead priest. A large crowd attempted to obstruct the priest’s burial. The»deputy magistrate ordered the dispersal of the mob, which refused to disperse. The police fired, killing three and wounding eight. The deputy magistrate and the superintendent of police and a number of police were wounded before order was restored. —Aue.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

EXTREMISTS CAUSING TROUBLE. Delhi, Feb. 7. Reports have been received of extremist demonstrations and threats in various districts. At Lucknow trains were fired on and additional troops have been sent. At Bateilly 5000 extremists assembled and attempted to seize the town hall. The police were stoned and the district magistrate and superintendent of police were wounded. The police fired on the crowd, two being killed and five wounded. The town is now in the hands of the military, and quiet has been restored. Later reports state that three were killed and ten wounded.
