SLAUGHTERMEN ON STRIKE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Feb. 9. The slaughtermen at Belfast were still on strike at noon. According to reports the strike has not spread. RUAPEHU ARRIVES. Wellington, Feb. 9. The Ruapehu, which arrived at midnight from Southampton, brought 226 immigrants: 69 for Wellington, 71 for Auckland, 7 for Gisborne and Napier, 11 for New Plymouth and Wanganui, 20 for Lyttelton, 13 for Picton and Nelson, and 15 for Dunedin. Included in the batch are 38 domestic servants; 92 are nominated, and 136 came out under the Imperial overseas settlement scheme. The health of all is good. ILLEGAL RACE MEETING.

Tauranga, Feb. 9. In the Magistrate’s Court the police proceeded against nine natives for holding an illegal race meeting at Matakana Island in Tauranga Harbor on January 2. Police evidence showed that the races were in full swing when they arrived, but were stopped. Counsel for the defence raised the point that the police had not produced the gazetted list of racing clubs holding licenses under the Act as required by the Race Meeting Act.

"Ihe magistrate ruled that the Onus was en defendants to show that the list existed, and, if they failed to do so, they should produce their license. Defendants were each fined £1 and costs.
