PERSONAL.

It is probable that Mr. Justice Chapman will preside over the. sessions of the Supreme Court at New Plymouth, which open on Tuesday next. A London cablegram announces the death of Sir Henry Jones, professor of moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow. A London cable announces the death of Sir Alfred Bird, M.P. for West Wolverhampton, through being knocked down by a motor-car. Mr. E. G. Sutherland, who represented New Zealand in the Australasian field event championships, is touring with the South African athletes who arrived in New Plymouth last evening. He unfortunately injured his ankle in a pole vaulting event in Adelaide. The Rev. A. McCallum, president of the Methodist General Conference of Australia, is visiting the Dominion in connection with the centenary celebrations of the Methodist Church, and is expected to arrive in New Plymouth next week.

Mr. W. E. Burley, who has held the position of science and agricultural instructor at the Stratford School, has accepted a position at the Auckland Technical School. Mr. Burley’s resignation was received at yesterday s meeting of the Taranaki Education Board. Tn the course of his letter he expressed appreciation of the manner in which he had been treated by the board as a whole, and by fellow instructors, and for tjhis reason he regretted his departure. Mr. Burley’s resignation takes effect from February 28.

Mr. Percy Scott Leggatt, principal of the engineering firm of Messrs. Thomas Summerson and Sons, Ltd., Darlington, England, arrived in New Plymouth yesterday by motor car from Auckland. He is accompanied by his wife and daughter and Mrs. and* Miss Thurston. Mr. Leggatt. who leaves to-day for Wellington, is returning to New Plymouth in about three weeks’ time. He stated that the party had a very interesting journey across Mount Messenger and were hospitably received on route, at Te Awamutu and Uruti.
