SOUTH AFRICAN ATHLETES.
The visit of the South African athletes to New Plymouth is an event of general interest, for they come, not only as athletes of considerable prowess, but as representatives of a sister Dominion which we hold in particular esteem. Sport is a common denominator throughout the British Dominions, and the South African footballers showed us that the type of sportsmen they produce in South Africa is equal to the very highest in the Empire. The visitors may be certain of a cordial welcome, and that they will be made to feel that they are amongst friends and well-wishers. The pity is that their stay is so brief, for it does not give them the opportunity of seeing what there is to be seen in the town and district, nor of the local people extending to them the hospitality they would wish. The visitors have alreadv proved their worth on the northern athletic fields, and as they have now struck their true form they should put up some good performances to-morrow. In any case their visit here will give a decided filip to local athletics, which have been at a rather low ebb since the war. There is no form of sport more worthy of support than athletics—it is so clean and healthy —and it is to be hoped the meeting tomorrow will be a decided success, and" that the public will show their appreciation of the visit of the distinguished South African athletes by attending in large numbers.
