Cabinet is discussing the railway situation with the political leaders and the railway unions. Meantime the strike has extended to Mecklenburg, and the engine-drivers’ unions in W T urtemberg, Baden and Bavaria threaten to join unless the Government forthwith negotiates directly with the Railway Workers’ Union. GENERAL JOFFRE’S TRAVELS. Tokio f Feb. 6. Following a continuous series of functions General Joffre departed for South Japan preparatory to sailing for America, where he will be the chief participant in the dedication of a peace portal on the British Columbia border.—Reuter. STRIKE AT SMITHFIELD. London, Feb. 6. A lightning strike of 400 meat distributors at Smithfield has deprived London of its fresh meat supply. The strike is in sympathy with a strike of slaughtermen which took place last week.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
