THE RACES.
OPENING DAY TO-MORROW.
GOOD SPORT PROMISED.
The Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting opens to-morrow. With a promise of good racing and fine weather the New Plymouth course will no doubt be the centre of a large gathering of people from al] over the province. Acceptances on Saturday were very satisfactory. On the whole the events have filled well, while the horses engaged are representative of leading stables in the North Island. The Taranaki Cup has ten acceptors, including a number of recent cup winners, and other races have drawn about a dozen horses in each case. Mr. C. O’Connor will act as starter and the judge is Mr. J. R. L. Stanford.
Special train arrangements have been made for the convenience of people in other parts of the province who wish to make the trip to the meeting and the fact that the departure of the Rarawa has been delayed until Saturday evening would facilitate the attendance of northern patrons of the Taranaki Club’s fixture.
The catering arrangements will be in charge of Mr. Shepherd, of the Hygienic Bakery. Mr. Shepherd will also have the management of the afternoon tea kiosk, while the booth will be in charge of Mr. E. Whittle. The second day’s races take place on Saturday,
