REPLY TO LORD CHANCELLOR. BY LABOR LEADER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Feb. 4. Mr. ,T. R. Clynes. replying to Lord Birkenhead’s attack on Labor, said that industrial troubles since the war had I often been prevented by the Political Labor Party. Their service had been the service of restraint and sustained appeal to patience. The finance of the Poplar Guardians was Christian carefulness compared with the Government’s lavish spending of public money on worthless and wicked objects abroad and paying some totally useless Ministers at Home. Lord Birkenhead was an advocate with great talent, as shown by his recent speeches in the House of Lords for and against the settlement of the Irish question. He was endowed with qualities which the Coalition required. Lord Birkenhead one day was furious with the peoples of Ireland. Egypt, Russia, and Germany, and the next day was feebly inviting them to meet him and his Government colleagues to receive concessions which were always withheld until the Government was obliged to surrender.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
