CLIFTON FOOTBALL CLUB SPORTS. ▲ SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. SKJELLERUP W’INS THE BIG MONEY. Tiie enterprise of the Clifton Football Club in putting on an attractive programme, with good prize money, was justified, a very interesting afternoon’s sports being provided on Saturday. Favored by fine weather, there was a good attendance of -the public, the gate belhg about £l6 better than last year. The arrangements for the gathering were very complete. The committee, and particularly Messrs. D. George and R. Tate, had been to considerable pains in preparing the track, which was a good one, the Sheffield being run over a straight 135 yards. Everything worked smoothly. the officials all knowing their duties, with the result that the programme of running and cycling events was got off to time and without a hitch. Racing was keen, the competitors being after the big money offering. Mr. R. Tate, as starter, got the men away well, having his fields well under control, no competitor being allowed to get a break on the field. Messrs. Jas. McLeod, A. George and O. Cook, as judges, gave their decisions quickly and correctly, though in most cases the tandicapper, Mr. C. A. Burke, had brought his fields close together. Other officials who assisted towards the success were the stewards, Messrs. G. W. Skelton (competitors). W. H. Nosworthy (Press). T. Taylor (result), W. Turner. W. Telfar, and F. Ross (course), and T. Fowler, C. L. Abbott and J. Colman (marksmen). The principal event, the Sl effield Handicap- was won by E. F. Skjellerup off the 12yds mark. He is a good runner, hailing from Hawera, where he has resided for about nine months, coming previously from Melbourne. A protest for wrong performances was withdrawn after evidence had. been taKen by the protest committee (Messrs. D. George, G. W. Skelton and T. Taylor). H. Skelton, a youth of sixteen, also rah very prominently. Mr. A. Hauren> of Manaia, was present as stipendiary steward, and warned one of the cyclists for careless riding. The catering was in the hands of a strong committee headed by Mrs. H. Spurdie, and the refreshment' booth was controlled by Mrs. Trim, each department adding consid- , erably to the revenue, as did also the chain Stepping, under the charge of Mr. Young. The Waitara Band rendered an enjoyable programme of music.

Messrs. H. G„ Southwell and H. Spurdie, the secretaries, got through their arduous duties well, and they, together with the president (Mr. D. George) and other officials, were the recipients of many complimentary remarks on the success of the function. Detailed results; — RUNNING EVENTS. 135 Yards heat: Fryday 1, Conaga 2. Five started.
