RACECOURSE BOOTHS.

APPLICATIONS FOR LICENSES. NO PERMIT FOR STEWARDS’ STAND. Applications by E. Whittle for conditional licenses (1) in respect to the publican’s booth at the racecourse, and (2) in respect to the stewards’ stand at the racecourse, on the occasion of the autumn meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club, were considered at a special meeting of the Taranaki Licensing Committee on Saturday. Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., presided, and there were also present, Messrs. F. Bellringer, J. S. S Medley, J. S. Connett, W. xxmbury and F. P. Corkill. Mr. J. H. Quilliam appeared on behalf of Mr. Whittle, and Senior-Sergeant McCrorie represented the police. The chairman at the outset explained that himself and two members of the committee might deal with the application, but in view of the decision come to concerning • applications recently, he had thought it wise that the

| whole committee should be brought to- | gether to hear what..had to be said and ■ decide the matter.

I In respect to the application for a license for the publican’s booth no objection was raised by the police, and this was granted until 5.30 p.m. Regarding the application for the license . for the stewards’ stand the police saw no reason why this should be granted. Mr. Quilliam said the application only required to be understood, and there could be no reasonable objection t|> it. The general public, in fact, even members of the club, had no right of 'access to the stewards’ stand. It was I reserved for the officials, and visitors, and the idea in making' the application was that if an official desired to entertain a visitor he should be allowed to do so in the stewards’ stand instead of having to gu across to the booth. He also pointed out that similar applications were granted by other licensing committees. It was eventually moved by Mr. Bellringer and seconded, hy Mr. Am bury that the application be declined, Mr. Bellringer remarking that he saw no reason why the committee should go beyond the police report. Messrs. Bellringer, Connett, Ambury and corkill voted in favor of the motion and Mr. Medley against it. This application was therefore refused.
