STATE ADVANCES.

TO LOCAL BODIES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Feb. 3. The Prime Minister stated emphatically in the House yesterday that the limit of the advances made by the State Advances Department to local bodies could not be increased at the present time. The question was raised by Mr. R. Masters (Stratford), who asked that the limit should be raised from £5OOO to £lO,OOO. The smaller sum, he said, was not sufficient to enable the local bodies to proceed with necessary roads and bridges. “I should be very glad if it were possible to increase the amount that may be lent by the State Advances Department to the local bodies,” said Mr. Massey in reply. “But under existing conditions it is not possible. I cannot do it. When conditions improve I shall be glad to restore the maximum amount originally intended to be lent by the Department to the local bodies.”
